Definition: "WHALENESS is the wellbeing created by whales – for the planet and the people."
Whaleness is more than a concept – it’s a movement.
Through their presence, their songs, and their vital role in the ecosystem, whales create ripples of harmony far beyond the sea. Whaleness is about recognising, celebrating, and embodying this gift – for ourselves, for our communities, and for the Earth.

The Visionary behind WHALENESS
Julia Graeter, also known as Whale Woman and the Founder & CEO of we.are.tohorā, is the Visionary and Thought Leader of Whaleness.
Julia envisions Whaleness as a new paradigm for how we live, connect, and care – inspired by the wisdom of whales and rooted in science, creativity, and activism.
In her keynote speeches Julia Graeter brings the concept of Whaleness to global audiences and is known for inspiring the listeners with her unique perspective on the connection between whales, planetary health, and human wellbeing.
Through Julia Graeter's vision, Whaleness has grown into a global call to action.
Whaleness inspires us to:
- with ourselves through stillness, awe, and presence.
- our relationship with the ocean as one of reciprocity.
- wellbeing – ecological, communal, and personal.
This is not just about saving whales – it’s about allowing whales to save us.
Why whales matter
Ocean Engineers
Ocean Engineers – Whales fertilise phytoplankton, which produce over half of the world’s oxygen – that's every second breath!
Climate Allies
Climate Allies – Each great whale stores tons of carbon, helping regulate the global climate. When a great whale dies the carbon sinks to the bottom of the ocean and is stored there for centuries (this is called the Whale Fall).
By fertilising phytoplankton (see first point) they also help to capture as much CO2 as four Amazon Forests!
Wellbeing Advocates of the World
Wellbeing Advocates of the World – Listening to their songs can help to regulate your nervous system and can help you to feel relaxed and connected.
Teachers of Connection
Teachers of Connection – Their songs, migrations, and social bonds inspire us to live with more balance and unity.
Cultural Wisdom Keepers
Cultural Wisdom Keepers – Across the world, whales have been revered as guardians, guides, and symbols of deep wisdom.
